Matt -  The tradition is that if you were a good boy/girl, you will get presents in your stocking on Christmas, but if you were bad, you will get a lump of coal instead.  I have never heard of anyone’s parents, oops I mean “Santa Claus” actually leaving coal in their stockings.  BUT, that is the tradition.  In my family, the stocking is usually filled with chocolates, and occasionally a small gift like a watch or necklace or something.  My mom even made stockings for her two dogs and she fills them with treats.

Matt - When I was a kid, my family and I would go caroling with our neighbors and, since it was cold outside, we would make a fire inside a metal barrel and stand around it to stay warm in between singing carols.  Each person would carry a little white candle with them and a piece of paper with the song lyrics on it.  We would go around to all the houses in the neighborhood and sing carols to the people who lived there.  I can’t really imagine doing this today, but it was nice back then.

Matt - I have never made a gingerbread house before, but I have seen a lot of them and they look like fun.  My university even has a competition to see who can build the most “structurally sound” gingerbread house.  I can’t wait to build one with Bethinha for the first time this year.

Matt - The tradition of hanging mistletoe is usually done at Christmas parties where couples will walk under it (like a doorway).  If you and your namorado walk underneath it, you have to kiss or you will have bad luck.

Matt -  The recipe for eggnog sounds very strange, even to me and I am american.  BUT, it can taste very good if it is made properly.  When it’s made right, it tastes like melted vanilla ice cream.  Also, it is usually made with some kind of liquor, like bourbon (aka whiskey from Kentucky), so it makes for some interesting times when your whole family gets together and drinks eggnog.

Matt -  I never did this, but my friends did when I was a kid.  I was always a little jealous because they would get to open a new little door every day of December up until Christmas and behind every door was a piece of chocolate.

Matt - In my family, we always had a big special dinner on Christmas eve as well as Christmas day.  On Christmas eve, it was always just me, my mom and dad, and my brother, but the dinner was special and we lit candles and listened to Christmas music during dinner.  Christmas day, on the other hand, was a big dinner with the WHOLE family; cousins, aunts, uncles, grandma, grandpa, etc.  This was where we all got the opportunity to exchange presents with each other and see what “Santa” brought to the little ones.

Matt - A lot of Americans do this, and it is a very special tradition to them.  But my family has always had a fake tree.  We had a real tree one or two years and I didn’t like it because the needles fell everywhere and there was sap (sticky stuff) all over everything.

Matt - I think the Christmas card tradition is kind of tacky but some people love it.  American families usually get together and take a nice picture to put on a card and send to all of their friends during Christmas.  Perhaps one day when Beth and I start a family I will want to make a Christmas card.

Matt - Back in the 80’s and 90’s it was customary to wear a festive Christmas sweater to Christmas parties and family gatherings to show that you had the “Christmas spirit”.  I even have a picture of me when I was 4 wearing a Christmas sweater.  However, the sweaters became more and more “festive” as the years went on and eventually they became a big joke.  People would compete to wear the ugliest Christmas sweater they could find to out-do each other.  Now, people have parties where the theme is to wear an ugly Christmas sweater.  I’ve never been to one but I know they are pretty common.
